Fr. Michael McGovern ‘82 Appointed Bishop of Diocese of Belleville
Pope Francis announced early Friday morning that he has named Father Michael McGovern ‘82 as the Bishop of the Diocese of Belleville. Bishop-elect McGovern ‘82, a native of Evergreen Park, IL attended Christ the King Grammar School and Saint Ignatius College Prep (see black & white photo above). He also served on the Board of Trustees at Saint Ignatius College Prep from from July 2013 to June 2019.
He graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 1986, and from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary earning an S.T.B in 1993 and an M.Div. in 1994. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 21, 1994.
The Holy Father also announced that he had accepted the resignation of Bishop Edward K. Braxton, who was installed as the Bishop of Belleville in 2005.
"We congratulate Bishop-elect McGovern on his appointment to the Diocese of Belleville,” said Cardinal Cupich. “He has served the People of God and the Church with humility and distinction for more than 27 years. We are confident he will be a strong and compassionate leader for the Belleville diocese, and we look forward to working with him."

“I am humbled and honored by the Holy Father’s appointment,” said Bishop-elect McGovern. “I have much to learn about being a shepherd of a community as bishop; I am grateful to the bishops and priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago who have been such good role models for me.”
Bishop-elect McGovern has had several parish assignments in the Archdiocese of Chicago, as well as leadership roles supporting the Incardination Committee, Lay Ecclesial Movements, Extern and International Priests, Presbyteral Council, Priests’ Placement Board, and the College of Consultors. He has recently served as the Interim Episcopal Vicar for Vicariate I since the appointment of Bishop Alberto Rojas as Bishop of the Diocese of San Bernardino.
